Animal shelters across Saskatchewan are joining forces to find new families for pets this summer.

The Saskatchewan Federation of Humane Societies is hosting a three-day, province-wide adoption event, called Empty Our Shelters.

The event aims to find homes for more than 500 homeless pets in the province.

The Saskatoon SPCA is waiving adoption fees for adult cats and reducing fees for kitten adoptions as part of the campaign.

“Pet overpopulation, specifically cat overpopulation, is a real problem in our community, and around spring and summer time we see our cat population rise significantly,” Cathy Brin, with the Saskatoon SPCA, said.

“We offer these adoption drives in an effort to help clear out the shelter of cats, to make room, inevitably, for the more cats that will find their way here throughout the summer.”

Cats and kittens make up the highest number of incoming animals at shelters in the summer because of spring births and because more pets are allowed to stray outdoors, according to the Saskatoon SPCA.

Empty Our Shelters runs Aug. 18 to 20.
