A new privately run liquor store opened in Saskatoon Friday.

Co-op opened a stand-alone liquor store in the city’s Blairmore neighbourhood.

The store features a selection of about 4,000 beers, wines and spirits as well as a ‘tasting room’ and a walk-in cooler for beer.

The alcohol is billed and shipped through Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, but Co-op is able to buy products from outside the province to offer a larger selection than government-run liquor stores.

Despite opposition from the union representing publicly-run liquor stores, the Saskatchewan government opted to allow two private liquor stores in Saskatoon.

The second store, which is slated to open this fall, will be run by Sobey’s in the Stonebridge area.
