Much of downtown Saskatoon was left in the dark Thursday.

The city says power was knocked out just before noon on several downtown blocks after road crews hit an underground network. According to witnesses, a construction worker hit an underground powerline at 23rd Street East and Second Avenue North.

Blocks between 19th Street and 24th Street, and between Idylwyld Drive and Second Avenue, were without power. Businesses including Midtown Plaza, Scotiabank Theatre and TCU Place were affected.

Power was restored in the area just before 4 p.m.

Traffic lights in the area were still working during the outage.
