Police are now releasing more information about the death of a man in the Kerrobert area.

Johan Klassen Jr., 26, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his father Johan Klassen Sr., 53 (not 56, as was originally released by police).

On Nov. 2, around 4:20 a.m., Kindersley RCMP received a complaint that a semi-truck had been stolen from a farm yard north of Kerrobert. The complainant was able to provide a description of a suspect, and a direction of travel.

Shortly after that, RCMP received a report of death at a residence in Kerrobert. Police found the body of Klassen Sr. Officers determined that Klassen’s death was suspicious and identified a person of interest. The description of that person matched the description of the suspect in the semi-truck theft.

Kindersley RCMP immediately called in help from other detachments, and began searching for the stolen semi. They found the truck stuck in a slough near the Alberta border, northwest of Luseland. The semi was in approximately four feet of water, about 30 metres from shore.

Police say the man inside the truck would not get out, so they immediately closed off the scene.

Around 2:00 p.m., RCMP took the man into custody and security restrictions around the area were lifted.

Police laid a murder charge against Johan Klassen Jr. on Nov. 3.

He made his first court appearance in Saskatoon on Friday. Before he appeared in court members of the gallery were visibly upset. When Klassen Jr. entered the courtroom someone could be heard saying, “what did you do?”

People began sobbing loudly when the murder charge was read. They were too distraught to speak with media outside of court. Klassen Jr. shook his head when he was asked if he had spoken to a lawyer.

He is expected back in court on Nov. 23.
