Saskatoon police say that there has been a recent increase in the number of aircraft personnel targeted by laser pointers while in flight.

Last year there were 14 cases in Saskatoon, and this year alone there have already been six cases.

The light from lasers can distract the pilot, create glare and cause temporary blindness. Police say lasers pose a serious risk to aviation safety.

Penalties for pointing a laser at an aircraft range from a $3,000 fine to a criminal record.
