Shots rang out as Saskatoon police and a suspect driving a stolen vehicle exchanged gunfire Saturday.

The car chase took officers across the city before the stolen vehicle — a red Pontiac — was rammed by two police cruisers and stopped at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and 22nd Street, police said in a media release.

A 35-year-old man was taken into custody in front of numerous bystanders at the crash scene.

The incident began around 2:40 p.m. when an officer attempted a traffic stop at 8th Street and Goodwin Avenue near the city’s Greystone Heights and Brevoort Park area.

The lone occupant of the vehicle refused to stop and began driving erratically. The officer called off the pursuit but notified other officers in the area, police said. The vehicle was then spotted by two other patrol cars on the city’s east side, but they did not pursue the car.

The suspect was then seen on the west side, driving on 33rd Street into oncoming traffic. He pointed a firearm at police and, during the late stages of the chase, he shot at officers. Officers fired back, police said.

Witnesses said they heard shots in the area of Idylwyld Drive and 25th Street.

No one was injured during the incident, according to police.

Officers have since closed off several downtown areas — including 22nd Street at 2nd Avenue, 25th Street at Idylwyld, 22nd Street and Idylwyld, and 20th Street and Avenue R — as they investigate the incident.
