Saskatchewan residents should be more wary of lightning than tornadoes, according to Environment Canada.

“On the Prairies, a lot of people are concerned about tornadoes, when in actuality, lightning is probably more dangerous than tornadoes,” Terri Lang, a meteorologist at Environment Canada, said.

“We ask that people have that sort of awareness. We have people taking pictures and staying until the last possible minute, but they should be seeking shelter before.”

Just after 11:30 a.m., the government of Canada released a funnel cloud advidory in Regina and Saskatoon.

Last week, many people shared their pictures on social media of funnel clouds in Warman, Sask.

Two of the funnel clouds touched down, becoming land spout tornadoes, north of Saskatoon near Hoey and Hepburn.

But according to the weather agency, these tornadoes are weak and are not expected to intensify because there currently isn’t enough heat or moisture in Saskatchewan for the twisters to become dangerous.
