Police tape, evidence markers, and blood, that’s what guests at a Saskatoon hotel woke up to Sunday morning.

Police say a 34-year-old man was taken to hospital in critical condition after being beaten around 5 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the Best Western Royal Hotel on Idylwyld Drive North.

The man’s condition was upgraded to stable later Sunday. Police didn't say what type of injuries the man received and the name of the victim has not been released.

Hotel guests say there was some commotion Saturday night, noting a lot of activity in several hotel rooms. Other guests say they heard something in the parking lot around 5 a.m.

"There was banging on the door, telling him to open a door. That was about it, I just went back to bed until the cops woke us up this morning."

Investigators from major crime and forensic identification units were on scene all morning Sunday and police tape blocked off a section of the parking lot, and evidence markers covered the ground.
