A week has passed since a severe wind storm hit Saskatoon, and while the cleanup is done, insurance companies are still sorting out the mess.

Winds gusting close to 110 km/h ripped off shingles, blew a window out of a downtown office building, bent a cell tower in half, tipped over semi-trailers and campers, knocked over trees and garbage bins, and caused power outages throughout the city Jan. 15.

The roof at Prince Albert Northern Bus Lines’ Saskatoon storage facility was ripped off and crashed into eight buses parked in the lot. Crews spent days cleaning up the mess and many of the buses are still being fixed.

Mike McElligott, the company’s supervisor, estimated the damage at $400,000.

“We've got insurance claims on all of them. We've done temporary repairs on a couple of them, and two of them are still out of service,” McElligott said.

SGI received 250 auto insurance claims and 547 property damage claims province-wide related to the wind damage as of late Tuesday morning.

“Lots of shingle damage, maybe siding coming off roofs. That kind of thing,” said SGI spokesperson Kelley Brinkworth, noting the number of claims will likely rise as snow melts and more damage becomes visible.

Both the Galon and Lifeline insurance companies said they’ve had about 40 claims each related to last week’s wind storm. One construction company claimed $60,000 worth of damage, Galon said.

SGI and both insurance companies said it’s too soon to know how much money it will cost to repair all the damage, but reminded residents to clear snow off their roof heading into spring and check for shingle damage.

If shingles are damaged, residents could have ice damming or leaking issues when the weather starts to warm up.
