The only highway into Cumberland House is impassable, according to residents of the northern community.

Highway 123 is breached with water, and the people of the Northern Village of Cumberland House and the Cumberland House Cree Nation are unable to travel.

“There are patients who need to travel on this road for medical reasons and the two communities depend on this highway for food, gas and medication,” Jacqueline McKay, a Cumberland House resident, said in a message to CTV.

A spokesperson for Saskatchewan Highways and Infrastructure said a full upgrade to the road isn’t possible with the ministry’s budget.

The communities are located on the Saskatchewan River and surrounded by lakes.

In 2015, the provincial government announced $950,000 for flood protection.

Crews are adding gravel to sections of the road to make it more accessible.
