An officer and a police service dog were injured while tracking down a suspect after a vehicle pursuit in Saskatoon over the weekend.

Shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday, police received a report of a vehicle that was driving erratically in the 1500 block of Second Avenue North.

Police say when a patrol sergeant attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle sped away at a high rate of speed. The vehicle collided with another vehicle at the intersection of 19th Street West and Avenue C South, and two people fled on foot.

A canine unit tracked one of the suspects to a backyard in the 600 block of Avenue G South. Police say the man was seen injuring the police service dog, and encouraging his own three dogs to attack the animal and the officer.

After being bitten several times, the officer and police service dog escaped the yard and waited for backup. The police service dog was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment.

A 54-year-old man was taken into custody with injuries consistent with a dog bite. He faces charges of assault and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

The driver of the suspect vehicle was located a few hours later trying to break into another vehicle in the 600 block of Sixth Street East shortly after 7 a.m., police said.

The 19-year-old man was arrested and charged with several offences, including evading police, dangerous driving and possession of stolen property over and under $5,000.

A 15-year-old girl who got out of the suspect vehicle at 33rd Street and Idylwyld Drive North has been charged with obstruction and breach of undertaking.
