Shep is a lucky dog. His owner was able to him with her when she was evacuated from La Ronge.

“The lives of pets are very important,” said Linda Hordyski.

Now, Hordyski is heading back to the smoke to help rescue other pets left behind. She’s joined up with Brent Arstall of We All Need a Rescue K-9 Rescue.

“Our goal is to bring out the dogs in the high risk area of La Ronge right now,” Arstall said.

Arstall has permission from evacuees to go into their homes and find their pets. He says the animals are just as scared as the humans and now they are all alone.

There are a number of animal rescues and SPCA’s taking in both strays and pets. Evacuees have dropped many of them off while they stay in make shift shelters.

CTV’s Jennifer Jellicoe was told that local dog lovers are stepping up to foster these pets until evacuees can return home.

There are also organizations like the Pack Project. They are collecting donations of food and the supplies for the influx of animals in Saskatoon and those left in northern Saskatchewan.

Donations have been pouring in as people band together to help keep the four legged family members alive.

"They have a chance at life if the fire continues going unfortunately into the town and a lot of these dogs might not make it," said Arstall.

As the fire burns closer K-9 Rescue packs for another trip to help get the pets out and back to their owners.
