The first of 234 girders for the new North Commuter Parkway Bridge have arrived in Saskatoon.

Police helped escort long-load flatbeds carrying the girders — or, support beams — through city limits to the bridge construction site Thursday morning.

The girders were manufactured in Edmonton by Supreme Steel. Each beam measures three metres tall, one metre wide and 33-and-a-half metres long.

Cranes will begin lifting the girders into place Thursday afternoon.

Construction on the bridge began a year ago and is expected to be complete by October 2018.

--- CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story stated 58 girders will be used on the bridge. In fact, each of the bridge’s four spans will have 58 and a half girders, for a total of 234 girders. We regret the error.
