The University of Saskatchewan's president will no longer have the power to veto tenure for professors under a tentative agreement between the school and its faculty.
The change was negotiated as part of collective bargaining for the Saskatoon-based university's 1,100 faculty members.
Concerns over tenure decisions came to the forefront in the spring after the former university president stripped tenure from a professor who spoke out against budget cuts.
The University of Saskatchewan Faculty Association has also been in court arguing about whether the school's president should have such a veto.
The school's administration had argued tenure is covered under sections of the Universities Act that could be interpreted to give the president a veto.
Both sides say the change is necessary.
