Saskatoon city council approved the first stages in a plan to get more people living downtown Monday night.

The approved infill strategy will allow people to build garage and garden suites, with the goal of providing more housing opportunities to new residents.

The plan also proposed changes to height and width restrictions on suite developments.

Councillors raised concerns about the suites potential impact on traffic and parking. They also questioned whether it would be a strain on water and sewer infrastructure.

Council will receive more detailed reports on suite guidelines, as well as the infill strategy’s effect on traffic and water infrastructure, in the coming months, before approving the final plan.
