A new campaign launched by local residents aims to save the Meewasin trails.

Keep Meewasin Vital is calling on people to share why the Meewasin Valley Authority is important to them through social media. Three local women behind the initiative, which launched Wednesday in Gabriel Dumont Park, hope an online campaign will persuade the provincial government to continue funding the MVA. Its provincial funding is currently under review.

Organizer Lorna Shaw Lennox says without funding, the trails will be difficult to maintain.

“Our end goal is to ensure that when the province is doing their funding review, they understand how important it is to the citizens,” Lennox said at a news conference Wednesday.

She said people can get involved by contacting the chair of the MVA, organizing events on the trails, and contacting their MLA.

The group has also created an online petition for people to show their support for the MVA.

The MVA’s interpretive centre is set to close July 1 after a lack of increased funding in the provincial budget.
