The NDP leads in voter support, while the Saskatchewan Party faces a drop, according to a recent Mainstreet/Postmedia poll.

The poll asked residents, ‘If a provincial election were held today, which party would you support?’

Among voters decided and leaning, 49 per cent said they supported the NDP, while 40 per cent said the Sask. Party.

The result is a seven point increase for the New Democrats and a seven point decline for the SaskParty.

Premier Brad Wall responded to the poll in a Facebook post.

"As I indicated around the time of the budget being tabled, the nature of the difficult decisions required meant that we would likely see a decline in popularity with Saskatchewan voters," Wall wrote.

A snapshot of all eligible voters show 21 percent are still undecided, while 39 per cent support the NDP and 32 per cent favor the SaskParty.

The poll surveyed 2,000 Saskatchewan residents from May 15-16, through landlines and cell phones. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.19 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The NDP support was led by Regina, with 58 per cent of residents supporting the NDP and 29 per cent leaning towards the Sask. Party.

The margin of error for Regina is plus or minus 4 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

“It’s a sea change following an extremely rocky budget rollout,” David Valentin, vice-president of Mainstreet Research, wrote in a media release.

In Saskatoon, there was a 46 per cent support for the NDP and 42 per cent for the Sask. Party.

The rest of Saskatchewan is tied between the Sask. Party and the NDP with both at 64 per cent support, according to the poll.

The margin of error for Saskatoon and the rest of Saskatchewan polled is plus or minus 3.7 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The next provincial election will be held in 2020.
