Two men are dead after a boat capsized on Lake Diefenbaker during a storm in central Saskatchewan Thursday night.

Elbow Volunteer Fire Department Chief Glen Amor tells CTV News two kayakers witnessed the boat capsize before the pair attempted to rescue the men.

One of the kayakers, a paramedic, attempted CPR on one of the men but was unable to revive him, according to Amor.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at about 8:30 p.m. STARS air ambulance responded but were unable to land because of the high winds, Amor said. Winds were gusting at about 60 to 80 kilometres per hour.

The second man from the boat was still in the water, wearing a life jacket, as the evening grew darker, according to the fire chief. He was found dead Friday morning.

The men are from the Elbow area.

Lake Diefenbaker is located about 130 kilometres south of Saskatoon.
