Fort McMurray is more than 800 kilometres from Saskatoon, but that’s not stopping residents in the Bridge City from pulling together to support the Alberta community’s evacuees.

Mainstreet Equity Corp. is offering up apartment suites to evacuees with three rent-free months. Odd Couple restaurant on 20th Street West is donating 100 per cent of its beer pint sales Thursday to Red Cross. Rawlco radio stations across the province, with a campaign dubbed “Saskatchewan Day of Caring for Fort McMurray,” are fundraising for the Red Cross until 6 p.m. Thursday. And, on Friday, Royal LePage Varsity is partnering with Siemens Transport to collect food donations at the Wal-Mart in Stonebridge.

The Royal LePage and Siemens groups are aiming to fill a semi-trailer with non-perishable items for the Edmonton Food Bank.

Bell Canada is also working to facilitate mobile-phone donations to the Red Cross Alberta Fires Emergency Appeal. You can donate $10 by texting “redcross” to 45678, $5 by texting “redcross” to 30333, or you can visit the Canadian Red Cross website to donate with a credit card or through PayPal.

The Red Cross says volunteers are not needed at this time. Financial donations are the best way to help.
