Hundreds of Saskatoon residents gathered Friday morning to catch a glimpse of the Queen’s youngest son.

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, was on hand at River Landing to help unveil a monument commemorating the War of 1812.

The visit was part of the prince’s eight-day trip through British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

The Whitecap Dakota First Nation donated the statue, which sits near the Farmer’s Market, to honour the contributions of First Nations people who participated in the war.

The earl said he hopes Saskatoon appreciates the monument and takes good care of it for years to come.

The prince visited B.C. from Sept. 12 to 16 before heading to Moose Jaw on Wednesday. He was in Regina Thursday and was scheduled to visit Swift Current after his stop in Saskatoon Friday.
