Saskatoon police officers braved the frigid waters of the South Saskatchewan River to make a daring rescue Wednesday night.

Police received reports of a distraught woman screaming and banging on cars on Second Avenue South just after 10 p.m.

Officers located the woman as she entered the river near the Broadway Bridge and stood in knee-deep water, Saskatoon police said in a news release. Officers talked with the woman in an attempt to get her to leave the river but she moved deeper into the water. An officer who entered the river in an attempt to bring the woman back to the bank was unsuccessful.

The woman was swept downstream by the river current but police were able to follow along the bank. Two officers entered the water and were able to bring the woman back to the bank as other officers pulled them to safety

A 27-year-old woman was taken to hospital and is expected to fully recover. None of the officers involved in the incident were hurt.
