RCMP have arrested and charged a 38-year-old man in connection with the death of Monica Burns.

Todd Daniel McKeaveney of Prince Albert, Sask. was arrested Wednesday and, on Thursday afternoon, charged with second-degree murder, Mounties said in a media release.

Burns, who was 28, was found dead Jan. 17 on a snowmobile trail north of Prince Albert. There is no indication McKeaveney and Burns knew each other, RCMP said.

Burns was from Sturgeon Lake First Nation but was recently living in the city, according to police.

Her family members spent this week walking to Prince Albert from Saskatoon in her memory.

“Monica's family has demonstrated an unbelievable level of co-operation and understanding… and their support of the investigators has been nothing short of amazing,” RCMP spokesperson Mandy Maier said.

“Monica was loved dearly by her friends and family, who will miss her greatly.”

Details of Burns’ autopsy have not yet been released.

Investigators appealed to the public earlier this week asking for information on two large black rugs found with her body.

Tips and information from the public were crucial to moving the investigation forward, Maier said.

McKeaveney is scheduled to appear in Prince Albert provincial court Friday.
