A little more than 1,000 people voted in this weekend’s advanced polls for the Saskatoon Meewasin byelection.

Elections Saskatchewan numbers show 1,069 people cast ballots between Friday, when advanced polls opened, and Sunday.

The byelection will see one of five candidates fill the Saskatoon Meewasin seat, which was left vacant when Roger Parent died in November, two weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer.

NDP candidate Ryan Meili and the Saskatchewan Party’s Brent Penner are neck-and-neck frontrunners, according to a recent Mainstreet/Postmedia poll, while Liberal candidate Darrin Lamoureux, Progressive Party candidate David Prokopchuk and the Green Party’s Shawn Setyo round out the ballot.

Advanced polls close Tuesday, with the byelection scheduled for Thursday.

Nearly 7,000 ballots were cast in the constituency during last year’s general election.

The Mainstreet/Postmedia poll, which was conducted Feb. 23, surveyed 430 Saskatoon Meewasin voters. Thirty-nine per cent of respondents stated they’d vote for Penner and 37 per cent stated they’d support Meili.

The poll carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4.71 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
