Kindersley MLA Bill Boyd has announced he will be resigning his seat, effective September 1, 2017.

"When Premier Wall announced his retirement, he talked about renewal within the Saskatchewan Party," Boyd said in a press release Tuesday afternoon. "I have been the MLA for Kindersley for a long time, so my retirement and a new MLA can be part of that renewal.”

Boyd was first elected as a Progressive Conservative MLA in 1991, and became the leader of the party in 1994. In 1997, Boyd gave up his leadership to become a member of the new Saskatchewan Party. He was re-elected in 1999, but stepped down as an MLA in 2002.

Boyd was elected as part of the first Saskatchewan Party government in 2007, and was re-elected in 2011 and 2016. During this time, Boyd served as a cabinet minister and held various portfolios.

Premier Brad Wall said in a press release he wishes Boyd and his family nothing but the best in the future.

“It’s no exaggeration to say if it wasn’t for Bill Boyd, there wouldn’t be a Saskatchewan Party,” Wall said. “Bill was willing to give up his position as a party leader to help form this new political voice for Saskatchewan, and has been a key reason for our party’s success ever since.”
