Fundraising efforts are underway to build a recreation centre in La Loche.

A GoFundMe page set up this week is aiming to raise $300,000 to build a rec facility in the northern Saskatchewan town.

“This recreation centre represents hope and the commitment that January 22, 2016 cannot and will not define the community of La Loche,” the page description reads.

The remote Dene community was shaken last month when four people were killed and seven were injured in a shooting. Two brothers were fatally shot at a home in the town before a teacher and teacher’s aide were killed at the community’s high school.

A dream of the teacher’s aide who was killed, Marie Janvier, was to bring a recreational facility to the community, the fundraising page states.

“This page is dedicated to helping fund that dream,” it reads.

“The intent is to also give this small community something it truly needs — a space for youth to play, learn and develop athletic, artistic, and employment skills, engage in their culture, and find someone who can listen and talk.”

The page has so far raised more than $3,100 since Monday.
