Damage was minimal in the latest of a rash of garage fires in Saskatoon.

Firefighters were called just before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday after smoke and flames were spotted coming from a garage behind a vacant home on the 100 block of Avenue T North.

A small fire discovered inside the garage and was quickly extinguished and the investigation determined the cause as incendiary, Saskatoon Fire Department said in a news release. No one was injured.

The blaze was the latest in a series of garage fires since October that have resulted in combined damage estimated at $550,000 and spurred fire officials to urge residents to take fire prevention more seriously.

In comparison, there were only four garage fires from October to the end of December in 2013 with damage estimated at $145,000.

Officials say there is a wide range of causes for the recent rash of fires, including welding and cooking activities.

Many of the incidents took place after residents had left their garage and the fire grew to a large size before it was noticed, the fire department said.
