A judge has been appointed to oversee the second-degree murder trial of Gerald Stanley.

Saskatchewan’s Court of Queen’s Bench Chief Justice Martel Popescul will preside over the high-profile trial, scheduled for early next year.

Stanley has pleaded not guilty in the case. The Saskatchewan farmer is charged in the death of 22-year-old Colten Boushie.

Boushie was shot and killed Aug. 9, 2016, while riding in an SUV that went onto a farm near Biggar, Sask.

Popescul was appointed chief justice in 2011.
