A four-year-old black lab may have saved his owner’s life Friday night.

Saskatoon police were called to a reported stabbing and attempted robbery on the 400 block of Avenue T South around 10 p.m. A man, after answering his door, was confronted by a suspect who tried to rob him.

The suspect was brandishing a knife and when he lunged towards the man, the dog — named McLovin — jumped at the alleged attacker and was stabbed in the neck, the dog’s owner told CTV.

“I guess he just sensed that I was in trouble and he got between me and the guy that was here with a knife, and just took one for me,” said the owner, who wished to remain anonymous. He was stabbed in the arm and was still shaken up by the incident Saturday.

The owner was surprised McLovin jumped in to stop the attack.

“I was actually very surprised. He’s not much of a guard dog,” the owner said. “He’s a very calm dog. He will protect his yard and bark at people, but he’s a really good dog.”

McLovin was taken to the veterinary hospital at the University of Saskatchewan. The dog’s wound was nearly fatal because it was close to the jugular, the owner said.

The lab was home by Saturday, recovering on the couch. The owner was paying close attention to the wound, watching for any sign of infection.

“He’s doing really good. There are some things that are of concern, mainly being that he could get sepsis in his bloodstream… which could definitely be life threatening.”

The lab will be getting stitches on his neck Monday.

Police said nothing was stolen during the incident.

The suspect is described as a First Nations man in his 30s. He is five-foot-eight in height and has a thin build, according to police. He has black hair, cut short, and may have had a mustache or goatee.
