One of two arenas in Melfort has been closed due to health and safety concerns.

A recent inspection of the 83-year-old Melfort Arena determined the roof was structurally unsound due to water damage. The air quality was also poor due to black mold.

Mayor Rick Lang said the arena is closed indefinitely now that plans are in the works for a new facility.

“We have instructed administration to make sure they do their due diligence so that we’re not compromising or making any shortcuts at the expense of the facility itself. But we have also instructed them to fast-track it to the point where we can get a new facility in a timely manner,” Lang said.

The city has since relocated about 500 hours of ice time to the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort as well as other rinks in nearby towns.
