A Saskatchewan business owner who allegedly threatened to fire employees or have them removed from Canada is facing extortion and fraud charges.

Dwight Hayter, owner of Manitou Springs Resort and Mineral Spa, was arrested Thursday in Watrous following an RCMP investigation into allegations of employee mistreatment.

Mounties received information from the Ministry of Labour Relations last fall regarding the mistreatment of workers at a business in Manitou, Sask.

Investigators determined three employees were threatened in exchange for money. The threats included terminating their employment or removing them from Canada, RCMP said in a media release.

Hayter was charged with three counts of extortion, three counts of fraud and one count of accepting the repayment of wages by an employee.

He is set to appear in Watrous provincial court May 21.

Manitou Springs was awarded the business of the year award last week at Saskatchewan Tourism’s 26th annual excellence awards.

Manitou is located north of Watrous in central Saskatchewan.
