A Saskatchewan man has been sentenced to more than 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to numerous charges, including sexual assault and making child pornography.

Michael John Slough was handed the sentence Tuesday evening at Saskatoon Provincial Court after pleading guilty earlier in the day.

Court heard the 43-year-old repeatedly sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl over a one-year period and a woman over several years. Police said he drugged the two to the point of unconsciousness and that investigators found more than 1,500 images and 83 hours of video footage of the sexual acts.

Some of the disturbing video was played in court. Police said, at one point in one video, investigators thought the girl was dead.

Slough was arrested in June, in Willow Bunch, Sask., after an investigation by the Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation Unit and Coronach RCMP. He was caught after giving his laptop away to be pawned for drug money, court heard.

The pawn shop owner saw some of the videos on the computer and called police.

The case’s adult victim was in the courtroom Tuesday. She read a victim impact statement to the judge.

The Crown and defence issued a joint submission after Slough’s guilty plea, asking for the sentence of 15 and a half years — which the judge accepted.
