A Pelican Narrows man has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for a house fire that claimed the life of a 10-year-old girl in the northern Saskatchewan community.

Darryl Sewap was charged with arson and criminal negligence causing death in relation to the Sept. 24, 2013 fire.

Denasia Highway was staying at her grandparents’ house when she died. Her remains were found in the fire’s rubble.

The arson count against Sewap was dropped earlier this year after he pleaded guilty to the second charge.

He was sentenced earlier this week and will serve three months behind bars after earning 15 months credit for time already served.

He faces a year of probation upon release.
