A 48-year-old man was taken to hospital after being rescued from a basement fire on Saturday night.

Fire ripped through the basement suite kitchen at a residence on the 800 block of Avenue L South around 11:30 p.m.

The smell of smoke alerted neighbours to the fire. Witnesses said they were not aware anyone was in the home at the time, but fire crews rescued a man who they found in the bedroom.

Firefighters treated the man on scene for smoke inhalation, and then he was taken to hospital.

Investigators say the cause of the fire was unattended cooking. Damage is estimated at $50,000.
