A Saskatoon man is making an emotional plea for assistance in reuniting his family

Saleem Akhtar is living in the city while seeking refugee status after coming to Saskatchewan from Pakistan.

His friends Akhtar and his family were facing persecution over religious blasphemy laws.

He arrived in Canada during the summer and found out he had cancer. After Ottawa refused to cover the cost of treatment, the provincial government stepped in.

On Monday a fundraiser was held for Akhtar, who is currently living with no income, no bank account and no work permit.

His wife and five sons are still in Pakistan and he is hoping to bring them to Canada.
