A man accused of stealing millions of dollars from the Whitecap Dakota First Nation appeared in a Saskatoon courtroom Thursday morning.

Hugo Gallegos, the First Nation’s former senior accountant, was charged in September with theft over $5,000 after discrepancies were found in the Whitecap Dakota accounts. The First Nation now estimates the amount stolen could be more than $2.5 million.

Gallegos appeared voluntarily in provincial court Thursday.

RCMP issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest shortly after charges were laid. He was believed to have left the country.

Gallegos was released Thursday but ordered to turn in his passport to authorities. He’ll be back in court November 26.
