A 59-year-old man is facing aggravated assault and several firearms-related charges after a shooting on a First Nation near Shellbrook, Sask.

Stephen Masuskapoe was arrested at a residence on Ahtahkakoop First Nation, about 20 kilometres northwest of Shellbrook, around midnight Tuesday after a 41-year-old man was shot in his pelvic area.

Police were first called to the home around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday following a physical assault complaint.

The complainant had left the residence by the time police arrived, and officers left the home shortly after responding the call.

Twenty minutes after officers left, however, police were called back to the residence following reports a gun was fired.

Masuskapoe and the 41-year-old man, the two involved in the initial assault call, were present in the home alongside a woman who witnessed the altercation.

The 41-year-old, who was suffering from a gunshot wound when police arrived, was transported to Shellbrook Hospital before moving to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon for additional care.

Masuskapoe was charged with aggravated assault, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm and unsafe storage of a firearm.

He made his first court appearance Thursday in Prince Albert.

Alcohol was involved, police said.
