A majority of Saskatchewan residents support the legalization of marijuana, according to a new poll by Insightrix Research.

Just over 58 per cent of respondents either somewhat or strongly agree with cannabis legalization. Nearly 40 per cent oppose the legalization, while almost two per cent preferred not to say.

The poll surveyed 802 SaskWatch Research panel members online.

Support for marijuana legalization is strongest among younger people.

According to the poll, 38 per cent of people18 to 34 years old are strongly supportive, compared to 28 per cent of those 35 to 54 years old. Women are more likely to oppose legalization than men.

But the poll shows most would not use marijuana even it it’s legalized.  Sixty per cent said they are not at all likely to use marijuana if it becomes legal. And only 21 per cent said they are somewhat or very likely to try it.

The liberal government plans to have legislation to legalize marijuana by July 1, 2018.
