Members of the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan headed to the polls on Saturday.

Voters chose from 47 candidates to take over four executive and 12 regional positions in the province. Voter turnout has gone up substantially from the last Métis election. There were 1,775 voters in the advanced polls in 2017, compared to 470 in 2012.

“It’s a new beginning that’s generally starting,” said Nicholas Kinar, a first-time voter. “I think it’s really important to get people to turn out and come together as a people.”

Some voters are calling this one of the most important elections in the Métis Nation’s history.

“Basically, the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan has been non-existent over the last few years,” said voter Melanie Lavallee. “For myself, and for my children, I want them to be part of this wonderful nation of Métis.”

The 73 polls opened at 9:00 a.m. and will be open until 7:00 p.m. Saturday. Results will be available at mnselection.ca.
