A Saskatchewan oil city now has an empty mayor's chair, and the search for a replacement is on.

At Monday’s council meeting in Lloydminster, Mayor Jeff Mulligan announced he's resigning, nine months after being re-elected.

He was first voted in as mayor four years ago, and then ran unopposed in a civic election last October.

Mulligan says he had been thinking about stepping down since last fall, and believes that he can better contribute to the city's needs in another way.

“I’ve accomplished a lot of transformational change,” Mulligan said in an interview with CTV News.

“I just felt that my ability to continue that pace in the mayor’s role was limited compared to my ability to make positive change happen in our community elsewhere.”

The city will be holding a byelection on Oct. 16.
