A Saskatoon judge had stern words Friday for a man who kidnapped and beat his ex-fiancée.

Judge Violet Meekma told Clinton McLaughlin to get his affairs in order before his next court appearance. McLaughlin was scheduled to be sentenced at provincial court, but the sentencing was adjourned because he fired his lawyer on Nov. 3.

Meekma warned McLaughlin against firing his new lawyer — who was given less than a day to review the case before Friday — and stated he would be given no more chances. He’d be on his own if he fired another lawyer, Meekma said.

McLaughlin pleaded guilty to kidnapping and aggravated assault in September.

Police said he abducted Mariana Cracogna on May 30. She was returning an engagement ring to McLaughlin when she was kidnapped, according to her family.

She was allegedly held captive for two-and-a-half days before she escaped. She was found walking along Highway 16. The couple who found her said she was weak, tired and badly beaten.

McLaughlin was arrested hours after Cracogna was found. He was lying along the highway.

The pair had gone two days without food or water, according to police.

A new sentencing date will be set next week. The prosecutor was against adjourning the sentencing, stating McLaughlin had already racked up too much time in remand.

Cracogna’s brother said Friday he doesn’t care when McLaughlin is sentenced — just as long as he doesn’t get out.
