A man accused in the fatal shooting of a young man in La Ronge and the abduction of a teenage girl has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 14 years.

Jonas Budd was sentenced Friday at Prince Albert’s Court of Queen’s Bench after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and a kidnapping charge.

The hearing saw an agitated Budd, who was charged in February 2015, kick the gate to the prisoner’s box and, after the sentencing, put his feet up on the box.

Budd was charged after a nearly day-long standoff with police following the shooting death of 17-year-old Dustin Bird and the kidnapping of the 17-year-old girl.

The girl is the daughter of Budd’s estranged common-law spouse, RCMP said following the arrest.

Police said Budd shot Bird at a home on the Lac La Ronge Indian Band during the early hours of Feb. 18, 2015, before taking the teen girl.

Officers caught up with Budd and the teen in the community of Cranberry Portage, Man., hours later. Police safely rescued the girl while Budd fled into the bush, making his way to his late father’s home in Sturgeon Landing, where he barricaded himself inside.

He was taken into custody late that night.

Victim impact statements were also read during Friday’s hearing. Family members wept in the courtroom.
