A 38-year-old man was pronounced dead in hospital Friday after being found unresponsive in his cell following an arrest earlier that day.

At approximately 12:20 p.m., officiers were called to 22nd Street and Avenue P where police say a man was running into oncoming traffic.

Officers arrested the man and charged him with a breach of court conditions and outstanding warrants.

Saskatoon police say that at the time of his arrest the man showed signs of intoxication.

He was then transported to the police station and put into a cell. At approximately 3:20 p.m., police say that staff found the man unresponsive.

The man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Paramedics are not on site in the police detention centre during the day - they only work night shifts.

Members of the Saskatoon Police Service major crime unit and the office of the chief coroner are investigating the man's death.

Police say Saskatchewan Justice has been notified and further information regarding the cause his death will be released once an autopsy is held.
