The alleged deletion of a video showing an altercation between RCMP officers and a man in a northwestern Saskatchewan community has prompted an investigation.

The video was recorded on a cellphone early Friday morning during an altercation between a man and officers responding to a call at a home in Meadow Lake, Mounties said in a media release. The two officers received minor injuries.

RCMP say another altercation then allegedly occurred between one of the officers and the witness who recorded the video, and the phone was seized by police.

It was discovered the video was deleted while the phone was in police custody, and now RCMP say an internal investigation has been launched.

The investigation will examine the deletion of the video and the apparent altercation between the officer and the witness, police say.

RCMP have requested the Justice Ministry appoint an independent observer to assess the investigation’s impartiality.

The man police say was involved in the initial altercation with the officers has since been charged with assault, resisting arrest and assaulting a peace officer. He appeared in court Monday. His next appearance is set for late August.
