Saskatoon artist and educator Zoey Roy has been awarded a national Indspire youth award, and she wants her mother to help her celebrate.

The Metis woman and her mom Maxine Roy are making and selling bannock to raise funds to help Maxine join Zoey in Vancouver for the awards ceremony later this month.

“She’s the one who first inspired me to do anything when I was little girl. She taught me how to dream big and how to go for my goals,” said Zoey. “Now that I’m being recognized for my achievements of being myself and following my own path, it’s only suiting that she comes with me. “

The Indspire awards celebrate the success of indigenous people from around the country.

“I’m really proud of her. It’s just showing she has a lot of courage and she has a lot of great ideas, and there’s a lot of people out there that really need this kind inspiration,” said Maxine.

The mother and daughter combo have so far made more than 1,000 bannock braids and are only about $500 shy of their $1,7000 goal.

The pair are taking orders for the bannock and also selling the braids at d’Lish by Tish on 14th Street East.
