Prisoners at Prince Albert Correctional Center are now accepting food again.

Eight inmates were involved in the strike at the jail, and some of them didn’t eat for a week.

Judy Orthner, Corrections, Public Safety and Policing spokesperson,  says the inmates ended the strike Monday night.

The inmates participating in the strike said they were upset at being confined to their cells while an investigation occurred and guards searched for contraband items. Normally, inmates are allowed out of their cells for six hours a day. That was limited to one hour a day after the investigation and search began on August 10.

Orthner says medical staff monitored the health of the inmates continually while the hunger strike was in effect.
