A Saskatchewan town founded as a dry community a century ago could soon allow the sale of alcohol.

Hepburn has not allowed the sale liquor for sale in the community since it was founded by Mennonites more than 100 years ago.

But on Wednesday residents voted to permit the sale of alcohol in the community. The vote was called to seek the opinion of residents after the town’s Co-op applied to the province for a liquor franchise.

Town council will send a letter to the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority saying the community will accept a liquor franchise if Co-op's application is approved.

Hepburn residents can consume alcohol in their homes, but there is currently no place to buy it in town.
