A University of Guelph dean will be heading west this summer for a new job in Saskatchewan.

Tony Vanelli has been named the University of Saskatchewan's next provost and academic vice-president.

“It’s a privilege to step into this role,” Vanelli said in a statement. “The U of S has always aspired to provide support to the development of individuals and the impact they can have in communities in the province, country and world.”

He will begin a five-year term with the school on Aug. 1, leaving behind the University of Guelph’s College of Physical and Engineering Science dean position, which he’s held since 2007. He’ll work as the university’s senior academic, planning and budget officer.

Vanelli, who earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in applied mathematics from Concordia University and a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo, is an award-winning teacher and researcher with more than 100 publications to his credit, according to a media release from the U of S. He’s also held the University Research Fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada while with the universities of Waterloo and Toronto.

He’ll replace Michael Atkinson, who’s served as interim provost since Oct. 1, 2016.
