A financial crunch in the city budget could delay funding plans for a new arena at the University of Saskatchewan.

City Coun. Darren Hill wants to rescind a decision made by council in February to provide an additional $3 million to the Home Ice Campaign for a twin ice facility at the U of S.

A motion tabled by Hill says the matter should be revisited during budget deliberations later this year.

In February, city council voted 6-5 in favor of giving another $3 million for construction of Merlis Belsher Place. The city previously earmarked $1 million for the rink, but the project’s fundraising committee requested additional money.

But last month, the province announced it was cutting a grants-in-lieu of taxes program that left the city with a projected shortfall of $9 million.

The twin-ice arena, estimated to cost $41 million, would replace the 90-year-old Rutherford Rink and be the new home of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies hockey teams. Campus recreation and minor hockey teams will also be given access to the ice.

Council will discuss the matter at their next meeting on Monday.
