A group working to save a program for autistic children in Saskatoon was relieved with Wednesday’s provincial budget.

The budget renewed funding for the Applied Behavioural Analysis Little Tots Program to the tune of $500,000.

“There was always the uncertainty as to whether or not the program would continue and the funding would be available for the program,” said Kelly Caruk, whose daughter is in the program.

“Now that the program is being funded on a permanent basis… that can give them a lot more certainty and now they can look at ways of improving the program and access to the program for more children.”

The Little Tots program, for children under four years old, was a pilot project of the Saskatchewan government and is run by Autism Services of Saskatoon.

Supporters went to the provincial legislature last month, pleading for funding to continue. The program would have to be shut down if funding wasn’t renewed, autism services said.
