Friends of the family who lost their three year old daughter in a tragic apartment fire are reaching out to the Saskatoon community for support. They are holding a fundraising dinner next month to try to help the family who have lost their home, their belongings ...and their little girl.

Three year old Jordin Christensen's short life ended in an apartment fire a little more than a week ago. Her dad and brother escaped, but now --with Jordin's mother –- they are without a home and most of their belongings.

Their loss prompted close family friends to put on a steak night fundraiser, inviting the public to take part --to help ease some of the hardship the family is facing. Kathleen Musgrove helped put the event together.

"I wanted to do the steak night for them so we could raise money so they could find a decent place to live and get their belongings back in order, buy furniture, pay off bills."

Musgrove says the family left the city for a while, but is expected to be back before the fundraiser. She says the family seems to be coping well, but their daughter will be sadly missed.

"She was the light of the sunshine. We called her 'peanut', she loved to eat. She brought a smile to everyone's face," says Musgrove.

Because incidents like this are so rare in Saskatoon, Assistant Fire Chief Dan Paulsen says crew members who were on scene were offered counseling immediately after. "Within the province, there's been on average of 18 fatalities a year due to fire. Every time it happens, it's obviously a devastating thing for not only the family members, but the community and those responding."

The Jordin Christensen steak night is happening on February 11th at Rodeo's Bar on Circle Drive West. Tickets are $20 a piece, and are available by calling Musgrove at 306-717-2350, or organizer Chris Martell at 306-881-0039.

Organizers are still looking for raffle draw items and donations, but most importantly --they would like to see members of the community come out for an evening that could help this family in need.
